Questioning when reading

This term we have begun learning about the comprehension strategy – Questioning.

Readers ask questions about the text and the author’s purpose and use information to explain their thinking before, during and after reading.

Mrs Baldwin read a book called Seal Surfer by Michael Foreman.

Throughout the book if there were any questions we had about the story, we wrote them on a post-it note on the page we had the question.

The following week our class worked in small groups and chose a book to practice the comprehension strategy with. We wrote down any questions we had at the beginning of the book, in the middle of the book and after the book was read.

We discovered that some questions were answered during the book whilst other questions we had were not answered. We then talked about that sometimes to find the answers to these questions,  we could research further, whilst other times we could use the pictures in the story to help us answer the questions. Sometimes our questions can not be answered and we can only infer or imagine what the answer could be.

it is Important to ask questions whilst you are reading because it gets you thinking about the book. but if your question does not get answered you can use your imagination.
