Say No to Bullying!

Over the last few weeks we have been talking in class about a very important topic known as bullying.

What is bullying?

Bullying is when a person or a group repeatedly and intentionally uses or abuse their power to intimidate, hurt, or damage someone else.

It is important to know the difference between what is bullying and what is not bullying.

Bullying IS NOT…

  • mutual arguments and disagreements
  • single episodes of social rejection or dislike
  • single-episode acts of nastiness or spite
  • random acts of aggression or intimidation.

Although ‘once off’ issues with a person or group can make you feel upset they are not a bullying issue. Bullying is something that occurs repeatedly which can cause damage to the person who is being bullied.

Bullying involves…

  • Imbalance of Power – people who bully use their power to control or harm, and the people being bullied have a hard time defending themselves.
  • Intent to cause harm – actions done by accident are not bullying, the person bullying has a goal to cause harm.
  • Repetition – Incidents of bullying happen to the same person over and over by the same person or group.

We also talked about the different types of bullying such as:

  • Verbal bullying – name calling and teasing
  • Social bullying – spreading rumors, leaving people out on purpose, breaking up friendships.
  • Physical bullying – hitting, punching, shoving
  • Cyber bullying– using the internet, mobile phones or other technologies to harm others.

We were very lucky to have some year 7 students visit us and do a presentation about bullying. They explained to us what bullying is and more importantly the strategies we could use if we come across bullying in our lives.

Strategies we could use to stop bullying include

  • walking away
  • speaking up against the bully
  • telling an adult you trust
  • sticking together

Check out the video below that has some handy strategies to deal with bullying. More info can be found at Bullying No Way Website.

  3. Dear Mrs Baldwin,
I think that the message the girls where saying really went through to some people and has helped some people a lot.

Grab a group of friends and stand up to the bully altogether because then the bully will feel that they don’t have the power that they had before anymore.

It’s important to stop bullying because if you don’t then it will get more serious and then if it wasn’t physical before then it will start to be physical.

    Regards, Chloe.

  4. Dear Mrs Baldwin,
I learned that if you stand up to the bully in a group the bully will stop and not do it again because they will get punished.
You can go away and get a parent or teacher to help the situation and see if the victim is ok.
So everybody is happy and people won’t get injured or have bad feelings for that person.
