On Monday 27th of June our class and Ms Di’s Foundation class visited the Adelaide Zoo. This was a great opportunity to bond with our CAT buddies and learn about the different animals and the environments they live in.
We all worked in small groups and we were partnered with our Foundation buddy. Being with our buddy meant we had to show strong leadership skills with helping them on the day as for many them this was their first school excursion that they had ever been on!
We had most of the day to visit all the animals and we were lucky enough that we could get up close to a lot of them.
The highlight for a lot of us was definitely the Giant Pandas called Wang Wang and Fu Ni. They are the Southern Hemispheres only breeding pair of Pandas. Check out this video of one of the Pandas eating bamboo.

The noisiest animal was definitely the Simangs. The Siamang is a species of gibbon native to the forests of Malaysia, Thailand and Sumatra. The Siamang is well known for its loud, throaty call. These calls are usually heard in the early morning and throughout the day, easing off after mid-day. These loud calls help mark their territories and strengthen bonds between the family group.

For part of the day our class had a 45 minute session with a zoo keeper. He taught us about the issues of poaching animals and what we could do to help. We also had a chance to look at many different animal skins, fur and artefacts that people have tried to sell for profit. These were collected from customs and are now at the zoo so we can learn about them.
We also had an opportunity to study two animals, the meerkats and the wild dogs. We had to choose 1 of each to watch very carefully and record all their behaviours. We had a special recording sheet to do this. This was a challenge particularly with the Meerkats because they all looked very similar and can move very very fast.
We had a fantastic day at the Adelaide Zoo and we learnt a lot about different animals, their behaviours and habitats. Thank you to all the parent helpers on the day that supported us!
You can check out the Adelaide Zoo Website for more information about all the animals!
Dear Ms. Baldwin’s class,
The pictures of the zoo animals are both amazing and beautiful. My favourite animal video to watch was the panda one. What an adorable animal to watch! We are now off for the summer, so we will take a break from blogging! Have a fantastic, fun-filled summer break. We are back at school the very first week of September.
Mrs. CDR
Hi Mrs Baldwin,
The thing I enjoyed the most was getting to see the lions, snakes & monkeys because the monkeys were really noisy like me, the lions were lazy and it nearly peed on me which is a bad thing & the snakes were hard to find so it was like where’s wally but instead where’s the snake.
My favourite animal was the monkey because when I was walking past them they threw this shell at me so I tried to split it open & I did, so I felt the inside of it and it was all soft and squishy.
I learnt never to stand behind a lion when it is standing up with tis bum facing you because it is probably going to pee.
regards Tarj
