Connecting Growth Mindset with our learning

Over the last few weeks we have been continuing our conversations and reflecting on the importance of having a growth mindset in everything we do. Here are some of the activities we have been doing at school this term to help us with having a growth mindset!

Class Novel: Fish in a Tree

Mrs Baldwin has been reading the class novel Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.

Here is the blurb:

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.

We are enjoying reading about Ally and we have already had discussions about how Ally has a fixed mindset about herself.  Some of us can really relate to what Ally is thinking and feeling particularly about certain topics or subjects that we learn at school. As a class we are really strengthening our mindsets by using positive language with each other and reminding each other that it is ok to make mistakes and ask for help. As we continue to read this book as a class we hope to see how Ally begins to change her fixed mindset into a growth mindset.

Sometimes Mrs Baldwin sets some reflective questions about particular chapters we have read as a class. We are learning about how to answer questions in sentence form by using part of the question as our answer.  It is really important that we justify our answers as well by explaining them and trying to use evidence from the text to help us to do this. Check out some of our responses below.

Growth Mindset and Class Dojo

Our class were also very excited when we found out that Class Dojo released 3 new chapter videos about growth mindset. These chapters teach us about times where we might fall into ‘the dip’ when learning a new skill and strategies to climb out of ‘the dip.’ We also were given the reminder that it’s okay to not be the best, as long as we are working hard to improve!

Growth Mindset in Music

During Music lesson with Diana we have been singing and playing music and making important connections with the  Growth Mindsets. These photos show us singing The Power of Yet Song while playing marimbas and using untuned percussion.

Finally we participated in a growth mindset drama circle. This involved everyone receiving a card that followed in a sequence. Each card had a different instruction and saying to read.  As one of us finished acting out our card, the person with the next card in the sequence started acting out their card.

  1. To Miss Baldwin

yes it did. To use Growth mindset instead of fixed mindset. I enjoyed listening to fish in a tree

  2. I think growth mindset is great because, if you have a fixed mindset you do not have trust in yourself that you can do something. But if you have a growth mindset you want to try something and never give up.

  3. We think growth mindset is good for life!We think this because it can help us learn & persevere! For example if you want to learn to play an instrument for some some reason, and you don’t know how to do it and you don’t try that is not a growth mindset. If you try try &try again, you can do it!That’s a growth mindset that helps you persevere!
That’s why we think growth mindset is good for life!(And AWESOME!)

  4. Dear Mrs Baldwin,

growth mindsets have helped in spelling because some are to hard and it keeps me going even if I can’t do the questions,

I would tell her to keep going & don’t give up,

I enjoyed learning the growth mindset sentences because I didn’t know about growth mindset & fixed mindsets.

    From Tarj😄
