Cyber Safety

Blogging has many terrific benefits and one of the main benefits is learning about cyber safety. As technology continues to grow and more and more people can access the internet and participate in online activity, it is very important to stay safe and to be aware of bullying online.

Cyber bullying

Cyberbullying is a term used to describe bullying that is carried out through internet or mobile device technologies.

Examples of cyber bullying can include…

  • repeated hang up calls
  • sending insulting or threatening text messages
  • publishing someone’s personal or embarrassing information online
  • creating hate sites or starting social exclusion campaigns on social networking sites.

Some tips on how to stop cyber bullying include…

  • Telling your parents, teacher or other trusted adult – don’t stay silent and hope it will go away – it won’t
  • Blocking and deleting the bully from all contact lists
  •  Not responding to nasty emails, chats, SMS or comments – this is what the bully wants so ignore them. (They will need your help to do this)
  • Having some ‘down time’ without computer or mobile. Give yourself some time away from technology just for a break
  • If the bullying continues – delete your current email, msn, hotmail etc and start a new account. Only give your new details to a small list of trusted friends.
  •  If the bullying continues get mum or dad to report the bullying to the Police. Each state has laws that prohibit online bullying and stalking. You don’t have to put up with it.

Our class discussed how to keep safe when using the internet both at home and school, particularly when we are blogging. We watched some videos of examples of what can happen when you are not being safe on the internet. One video asked us step into the shoes of a Cybersmart Detective. The story explored what may happen if someone revealed too much information online and end up in the wrong hands. You can check out the video here.

On Tuesday the 9th of February it was ‘Safe Internet day.’ To recognize the importance of being safe on the Internet we created some cyber safety posters to place in our small computer POD area located in our building. In groups we each chose a strong message to remember. Check them out here

  7. Hi mrs baldwin,
Think that being safe on the internet is very important because you could easily lose money or if it was really bad it could lead to death. Being safe is sometimes including reporting a user or maybe blocking them but make sour you tell an adult that you trust start away. I learnt that as sone as you put something out there you can’t get it back so you need to be very carefull in what you do post. I think the most important thing about cyber safety is to not give out personal information like address, last name, date of birth and much more. I think that the priminster should have striker rules about internet safety and student should be taught how to block and report a user or follower. I know that children should be court from a young age how to protect them self on line or chat rooms.
