In a Spin with the Earth, Sun and Moon

During the final weeks of this term we looked closely on the relationships between the Sun, Earth and Moon.

Firstly we undertook a role play where 1 student was playing the Sun and stood still shining brightly with a torch whilst another student was Earth and orbited the Sun whilst spinning. This helped us see how day and night occur depending on what part of the world you live in.

We also used a map of Australia to show which part of the country receives sunlight first which is Queensland and New South Wales. We then discussed time zones and because the sunlight shines on the Eastern part of Australia first, it is the reason why they are ahead of Adelaide for time and why Perth is behind us as they are the last to receive the sunlight.

We then looked at the Sun, Earth and Moon together and we learnt that:

  • The Earth makes one complete rotation on its axis once a day (24 hours)
  • It takes 1 year for the Earth to orbit around the Sun.
  • It takes approximately 1 month for the Moon to orbit Earth once.
  • The Moon would orbit around Earth 12 times each year.
  • The Sun does not orbit or spin.

We then worked in small groups and used the ipads to act out how the Sun, Earth and Moon orbit in Space. Some groups were very creative and added some humor into their play.

What did you enjoy the most about this lesson?

What did you learn about the Sun, Earth and Moon?

Can you write an interesting fact about either the Sun, Earth and Moon that we did not discuss in class?

  1. I like how you tell what you did in your role play. I remember when i learned about our solar system. How would we live if the earth was a little closer to the sun?

  2. Dear mrs Baldwin
I enjoyed doing it because I was the sun and I didn’t had to do any thing but shining on every thing
And I learned lot of good fats about solar system

    1. Dear Elena, thanks I thought your video was pretty cool to and you did a good job at playing the moon.

  3. Dear Mrs Baldwin,

One of the things I learnt when we were performing was that it takes one month for the moon to complete a rotation. I also learnt was that it takes one month for the moon to orbit the earth.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this lesson was trying to orbit and rotate the correct amount of times because I was the moon.

  4. Dear mrs B,
the thing I enjoyed most was getting to make the videos that was great fun I learnt all the diferent faces of the moon.

  5. Dear Miss Baldwin,
The thing i enjoyed most about the lesson was that we got to be as silly as we wanted to be and the golden rule was………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ………………..H…..A……..V………E………………………………………………F………….U………..N…………………….
The thing i learnt were facts about space.
one interesting fact that we didn’t say was the sun is a hot fire ball spinning in space.

  7. Dear Mrs B,
I wasn’t at that lesson I was at the dentist but I did see the video of my team (it was the crazy video / afro). But I did have a good time when we where rehearsing.
